Performing the signing ceremony today at Government House, Port Harcourt, Governor Amaechi called for closer tie between the Executive and the Legislature to facilitate the development of the state and ensure peaceful co-existence. The governor, who described the legislature as a crucial arm of government, challenged the legislatures to go out into the communities to monitor the implementation of the budget to ensure that it conforms with the aspirations of the people and agrees with the amount appropriated. He told the lawmakers that giving their approval, he is prepared to come to the floor of the Assembly between now and March to give details of ongoing projects in various communities of the state. While thanking the members of the House of Assembly for coming together to approve the budget, Governor Amaechi said “what you have just done is to give us the marching order to deliver on our promises and to deliver the approval you have given to us”. According to the Governor, the 2009 Budget contains a lot of projects involving Health, Education and Electricity which, he said when achieved, would serve as catalyst for industrial development of the state. The Governor, who expressed concern over the delay in the completion of the Multi-Million Naira Ogoni-Andoni-Opobo Unity Road inspite of the fact that government is fulfilling its financial obligation to the project appealed to the lawmaker from Andoni to tell his constituents, that if they chase away a contractor handling any project in their areas, they should not blame government for the failure of such projects. Governor Amaechi said one of the challenges of the present administration is the Trans Kalabari Road project, wherein he directed the Commissioner for Works to ensure that he meets with the contractors handling the project on Wednesday, explaining that his priority is to link all the Coastal Communities in Rivers State by road. Earlier, the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Ken Chikere had presented the document to the Governor for his accent, saying that when signed into Law, it will become the Rivers State Appropriation Law Number One of 2009.
