The Rivers State House of Assembly last Wednesday passed into law a bill seeking to establish an agency for the control of HIV/AIDS in the state with a call on the government to urgently constitute members of the proposed agency for prompt action.
The lawmakers, in passing the bill, noted that speedy constitution of the agency would enable government realise the objectives of the law.
The bill seeks, among other things, to create an agency that would facilitate the development and management of the policies and strategies of all sectors to ensure the human, financial and organisational resources to support the execution of the HIV/AIDS strategic plan in the state.
It will also establish, encourage and promote training programmes for the agency and other appropriate persons from public or private organisations.
Passing the bill into law, the Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Tonye Harry opined that HIV/AIDS has become a serious threat to human race, noting that the scourge, if not checked, was capable of wiping away the entire human generation.
