The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate and Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Chief Chibuike Amaechi, has reassured his supporters and the people of the state that he remains the flag-bearer of the party in the state.
Chief Amaechi, who said this yesterday while speaking to newsmen at the Air Force Base, Port Harcourt on arrival from Abuja, explained that contrary to speculations, he was in Abuja to attend the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) screening exercise for political office seekers for the forthcoming general elections.
“I have just concluded the INEC screening this afternoon before returning to Port Harcourt. I am still the state PDP flag-bearer, and there is no argument about that. I\'m still carrying the flag, and the flag has not been taken away from me and will not be taken away from me,” Chief Amaechi declared.
On the preparations for his campaigns, Chief Amaechi, explained that the party is in control of the campaigns with candidates as members nation-wide.
He said that in Rivers State, a committee headed by Mr Lolo Ibieneye, the commissioner for water resources, with three persons representing the senatorial districts with himself and his running mate as members, had been inaugurated.
He hinted that within the week, he would be establishing campaign secretariats with staff and directorates as well as inaugurate campaign committees in the local government areas and units to enhance smooth co-ordination of activities.
The flag-bearer disclosed that the South-South zonal campaign would be launched in Port Harcourt on January 29, 2007, with the president, national leadership of the party in attendance, emphasizing that arrangements were in top gear as mobilization has commenced for a fruitful zonal campaign in the state.
The speaker remarked that part of his programme would be to establish contact with the people to identify their needs, especially their preferred projects and work towards implementing them, pointing out that the present administration has left a lot of legacies that the in-coming government will consolidate on.
According to him, “Governor Odili has left a lot of legacies behind, we will therefore consolidate on such grounds, we will try to see how we can expand on them because it is better to begin from the known to the unknown,” he stated, and solicited the support of the people of the state towards a PDP-led government that has been tried, tested and proven to meet the yearnings of the people.
