OMEHIA INAUGURATES NEW ASSEMBLY….. TONYE HARRY ELECTED SPEAKER
The Rivers State Governor, Sir Celestine Omehia has performed his first official function by formally proclaiming the 6th Rivers State Assembly as stipulated by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Governor Omehia who also dissolved the 5th Assembly said he was doing so in exercising the powers conferred on him by the Law of the land.
The ceremony also witnessed inaugural sitting of the 6th State Assembly where the former Deputy Speaker, Mr Tonye Harry representing Degema Constituency, emerged as the new Speaker of the House, while a new member representing Khana Constituency I, Hon Charles Nwile, was unanimously elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Sixth Assembly.
In his speech at the occasion, the Speaker, Hon Tonye Harry, thanked the members of the Assembly for the confidence reposedon him to steer the ship of the Sixth Assembly, and promised that he will do his best to ensure that the new Assembly Surpasses the performance of the immediate 5th Assembly.
Hon Harry explained that the past Assembly performed creditably well under the leadership of Hon Chibuike Amaechi, but the present House would correct some of the mistakes that were identified in the process.
He thanked the immediate past Governor, Dr Peter Odili for the success recorded by the Assembly during his tenure, and the leadership he provided Rivers State , pointing out that the Assembly Complex built by him is the best in Africa , and fully equipped with all the modern facilities for proper legislative business.
The Speaker observed that Dr Odili maintained a good cordial relationship with the Assembly and respected the appropriation law, while thanking the members that are leaving for their immense contribution to the success recorded by the Assembly.
He, however, pledged that the new Assembly would cooperate with the Governor Sir Celestine Omehia in piloting the affairs of the state in the movement to the next level of development.
The event was witnessed by the wife of the Governor, Mrs Antonia Omehia, the Deputy Governor, Mr Tele Ikuru and his wife Mina, the National Vice Chairman of PDP South-South, Chief Godpower Ake, one time Deputy Governor of the State, Chief Dominic Anucha, the State PDP Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus amongst other dignitaries.
