RSIEC amendment law: Committee holds public hearing
 

The Rivers State House of Assembly adhoc committee saddled with the responsibility of organising a public hearing for the proposed Amendment Law on Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission has concluded its public hearing with the promise of building the public views in the electoral act.

The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Ebeku Kennedy representing Ahoada East l Constituency in the State Assembly said the intention of the public hearing was to articulate public views on the proposed amendment on the state electoral act.

He promised that the views collated during the hearing would be built into their commendation of the committee and transmit same to the whole House for deliberation and approval.

The state lawmaker said he was optimistic that the contributions made by the participants would be useful to the committee, and thanked them for participating in the public hearing.

Those who participated in the one-day public hearing include: the Nigerian Labour Congress, Rivers State branch, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), the Conference of All Nigeria Political Parties (CANPP), Non Governmental Organisation (NGOs) and other private individuals.

In their submissions to the public hearing, they commended the vision for the review of the Rivers State electoral act noting that the review will the commission conduct a credible elections in the state.

Although, there were divergent views on the proposed sections for amendments many were of the opinion that the proposed eight as members of the commission is in line others contended that the appointment of the eight members would amount to public waste of fund.

Other members of the committee include: Hon. Samuel Eke, Hon. Tony Okeah Anthony, Hon. Taneh Felicia, Hon. Immgba Irene Martins and Hon. Ewor Nname.
